Scottish Teachers for Permanence

Why stability
matters.

A teacher-led campaign for stable contracts, predictable work and secure incomes — and the continuity that Scotland's schools need.

Teachers need
continuity
at work.

We focus on stable work.

Our name is Scottish Teachers for Permanence. Early on, we recognised that permanent employment would not be achievable for everyone. Our aim is stability: contracts that give teachers predictable work, a reliable income and the ability to plan their lives.

For teachers who depend on casual supply, work can feel like zero-hours employment: waiting for a call without knowing whether there will be another shift or pay packet. Repeated short contracts can leave teachers unsure what comes next.

Permanent posts are one route to stability. Teachers on temporary and supply contracts need security and fair treatment too. We bring their experiences together with research to make that a public priority.

We speak to the media, engage with MSPs and government, and use freedom of information to ask questions about the teaching workforce.

How we make the case

01

Begin with teachers' accounts.

Protect the voice of the person sharing their experience. Keep their words and the context of their account together.

02

Show what the evidence says.

Use dates, sources and clear definitions. Explain what the figures establish, and where their limits lie.

03

Record what follows.

Bring findings to journalists and decision-makers. Record the coverage, discussions and responses that follow.

What the campaign has done

Research, voices
and public attention.

The campaign's recovered history includes press coverage, published teacher experiences, a ministerial meeting and research raised in Parliament.
