Scottish Teachers for Permanence · Campaign briefing

Stable work for Scotland’s teachers.

Stable contracts. Predictable work. Secure incomes.

Why it matters

Teachers need contracts they can build a life around. Uncertainty about the next shift or contract makes it harder to plan work, income and life outside school. Good education needs continuity.

Scottish Teachers for Permanence campaigns for stability across teaching contracts. Permanent posts are one route; teachers on temporary and supply contracts need security and fair treatment too.

One national measure—with limits

23.5%

of the 2024/25 Teacher Induction Scheme cohort were in a full-time permanent post at the September 2025 census.

This describes a particular cohort at a particular date. It does not measure every teacher’s work or income stability. Source: Scottish Government teacher census supplementary statistics, Table 1.6.

A question for decision-makers

What steps will you take to support stable contracts, predictable work and secure incomes for teachers, including those on temporary and supply contracts? How will you follow up and keep constituents informed?
