Universities in rural areas are reporting a decline in applications which is probably due to lack of permanent posts on offer.
The workforce group, including COSLA, discussed primary teacher 'over-supply'. Rural universities reported falling applications blamed on a lack of permanent posts, and a 10–20% cut to primary ITE intakes over 2025/26–2026/27 was floated.
