Full time permanent contract since 2017. Looking for work closer to home and have been interviewing since March 2020 – 6.5 years later and I still have been unsuccessful in gaining a permanent teaching position (full or part time) closer to home. I have applied to 6 different councils that are closer to home. There is no movement between councils and rarely any permanent contracts.

This is answer 166 of the 269 written answers that teachers let us quote anonymously in the Scottish Teacher Employment Survey 2026. It answers the survey’s last question: what do the people who make decisions about teacher employment need to know?

We have corrected spelling, added paragraph breaks and removed details that could identify anyone. Words in square brackets are ours.
