After studying for 4 years at university, gaining teaching experience abroad, completing a probationary year and now on my 2nd year of supply work I can honestly say the whole experience of teaching so far has been truly disheartening.
As I was placed in Glasgow City Council for my probation year I have since been restricted to being on any other local authority supply list as they are mostly for internal applicants only.
I find it ridiculous that not only are full time employment opportunities scarce, but we are also being denied the opportunity to do supply in other council areas, including my own.
I am essentially on a 0-hour contract, never knowing when or where I will next be working. With some supply jobs appearing at 8:50am to start at 9am which is extremely stressful and difficult to get to in sufficient time.
This is taking a mental and financial strain on myself and as a result of having very little work I am now looking at seeking financial aid.
The impact of this is not only effecting those on supply but it is also effecting pupils, families and other staff members as there is little to no continuity in schools. Teachers are constantly revolving due to the councils and governments lack of initiative and awareness of the supply situation.
I understand that providing every teacher with full time employment is a big ask but as educators I think we deserve better and so do the pupils.
