Where do they go?
2024/25 cohort
Every summer, new teachers finish their one-year induction. In 2024/25, 2,294 of them did. Each dot here stands for one in every hundred.
The September census
By the next September, only 23 in 100 had a full-time permanent teaching post. 34 were on full-time temporary contracts and 31 were not found in a teaching post at all.
It wasn’t always like this
The 2016/17 cohort did far better: 57 in 100 went straight into full-time permanent posts. Since then the share has more than halved.

Council by council FOI
Our FOI requests asked councils what happened to their own probationers. Of the destinations 6 councils reported, the share in a permanent post with that council ranged from 3.5% to 33.3%.
Councils count destinations differently and only see their own posts, so these are not directly comparable with the national census figure.

Destinations are measured at the teacher census the September after induction. “Part-time or other” is any teaching post that is not full-time permanent or full-time temporary. Where only full-time permanent and any-post shares were published, the full-time temporary share is shown as 0 and folded into “part-time or other”.
