However I have interviewed for jobs outwith teaching as I can’t afford to stay in the profession currently and can’t access things like home ownership while on supply.

No council letter, so I couldn’t buy a flat

After probation I remained at my school on a fixed term contract. The council refused to provide me a letter to say I would be on the supply list and may have my contract extended past Christmas. It was extended 4 times to cover the year. Because of this I was unable to purchase a flat and have to now spend more monthly to rent.

This has put me in a difficult position as I have yet to get any supply work through Teacher Booker. I am being added to another council’s list who still do phone calls which I am hopeful that I get some work with. However I have interviewed for jobs outwith teaching as I can’t afford to stay in the profession currently and can’t access things like home ownership while on supply.

In January they called us to a meeting to tell us this would not be happening and that we should still be grateful that they gave us the opportunity of our probation year and they could not guarantee supply interviews.
