I have completed my probation in 2024 but have never been offered a fixed-term or permanent contract and continue to rely on day-to-day supply work. This is financially insecure, as there is no guarantee of work or income from one day to the next. There should be clearer pathways for qualified and experienced supply teachers to move into temporary or permanent positions and have greater job security.

This is answer 29 of the 269 written answers that teachers let us quote anonymously in the Scottish Teacher Employment Survey 2026. It answers the survey’s last question: what do the people who make decisions about teacher employment need to know?

We have corrected spelling, added paragraph breaks and removed details that could identify anyone. Words in square brackets are ours.

I find it ridiculous that not only are full time employment opportunities scarce, but we are also being denied the opportunity to do supply in other council areas, including my own.

Since schools returned in August I have not had any work. Further, to get onto a permanent supply you have to have 2 years continuous service, this seems impossible when not getting any work at all.
