I have moved from a permanent contract in a private school to a temporary, part time BGE post as an English and Maths teacher in a Secondary as I was relocating due to family circumstances. I had to give a full term’s notice at my previous post so was facing unemployment since April.

Despite having such a long period to apply for jobs, there was not a single primary post advertised to apply for and had I not been offered the BGE post, I would be on the supply list as there were no other jobs (temporary, part-time or permanent). This was a cause of significant stress and I was actively looking into jobs outside of teaching despite wanting to remain in education.

This is answer 156 of the 269 written answers that teachers let us quote anonymously in the Scottish Teacher Employment Survey 2026. It answers the survey’s last question: what do the people who make decisions about teacher employment need to know?

We have corrected spelling, added paragraph breaks and removed details that could identify anyone. Words in square brackets are ours.

The notion of introducing a 3 year probationary year is a true slap in the face for us who have travelled, built strong experience and worked hard. This is merely a way to cut budgets for “expensive” teachers and continue the revolving door of probationers. The SNP should be a…
