A lot of supply opportunities are through word of mouth, with some people having been receiving regular supply work, at least 3-5 days a week while others like myself have struggled to even get a day a week. Every time I am offered a day or so it is never clear what is happening after one week or two weeks, so you can never feel safe that you at least have some income to fall back on.

I am definitely considering other career options as the whole system is very unfair and the government wants “Scotland to be the best place for children to grow up in” and receive education yet funding for teaching staff does not correlate with this.

This is answer 208 of the 269 written answers that teachers let us quote anonymously in the Scottish Teacher Employment Survey 2026. It answers the survey’s last question: what do the people who make decisions about teacher employment need to know?

We have corrected spelling, added paragraph breaks and removed details that could identify anyone. Words in square brackets are ours.

I now feel I am sitting here with a degree I cannot use and the more time goes on the more I feel a permanent job is not going to happen for me.
