Extended at a school I’d probably never return to

I have been more fortunate than expected, I am now in my 3rd year of supply. I managed to secure work for this whole first term during the summer. Today I was offered an extension for next term and given the situation, it would have been silly for me to reject the offer.

The trouble is that there are significant issues at the school, they are being taken to a union meeting next week. In an ideal world of job security, I would probably choose never to return to this school. I am hopeful that there will be changes as a result of this.

Having spoken to a colleague tonight who also had to move school this year, she is experiencing similar issues and afraid that leaving her school will have a detrimental impact on future employment within the city.

From my probation cohort of 187 probationers, 5 were given permanency. It came at no surprise that all 5 of those people had a parent who was a head teacher in that authority. Some people went to the union about this clear show of nepotism, but they were told there was nothing…

The notion of introducing a 3 year probationary year is a true slap in the face for us who have travelled, built strong experience and worked hard. This is merely a way to cut budgets for “expensive” teachers and continue the revolving door of probationers. The SNP should be a…
