Since passing my probation in June 2022, I’ve faced a constant struggle for teaching contracts, often relying on sporadic supply work.
How soul destroying it is coming in from working in a job that is not teaching just so I can pay the bills to then spend every evening until midnight or later filling out teaching applications only to get a standard rejection email for every one.
I have begun to look outside of teaching for jobs but my heart isn’t in leaving and it breaks me to walk away from something I worked so hard to get.
I personally have put a date on when I need to walk away and secure permanent employment outwith teaching.
However this month I was paid £500 for 3 days supply, this is nearly half my mortgage alone. How do I pay anything?
If I can[not] get a permanent full time job with a decent salary I’ll have no choice but to leave teaching and that is devastating. Me and my wife are pausing having children because the job market just does not exist.
Working on supply has affected my self-confidence. At times it has felt like there is no light at the end of the tunnel.
I have almost reached my continuous service twice now within the 5 years I have been teaching.
After this distressing incident, I had 0 contact from recruitment except a generic email about beginning the process for the supply register at the end of September.
It is a huge strain on finances and my mental health and coming into teaching was supposed to bring stability into my life as a single parent but it has been anything but.
A lot of supply opportunities are through word of mouth, with some people having been receiving regular supply work, at least 3-5 days a week while others like myself have struggled to even get a day a week.
During my probation year, when I raised concerns about the availability of teaching posts and asked what opportunities might be available after qualifying, I was told that “there were jobs in Dubai”.
