I have attended around 20 interviews in the past 2 years. Very regularly would be given an interview and only once received a job offer from this from a school I had been employed in recently. A lot of time and stress goes into preparing for these interviews when most likely an internal candidate is hired each time.

This is answer 117 of the 269 written answers that teachers let us quote anonymously in the Scottish Teacher Employment Survey 2026. It answers the survey’s last question: what do the people who make decisions about teacher employment need to know?
